20 years of sound, music and entertainment
With a musical career spanning 20 years, Dennis Briones has made numerous contributions to various musical works such as jingles, music for movies, original songs, musical plays, soundtrack and soundscape for respected names, networks and companies as well countless private projects. His works have been used or released in countries such as The Kingdom of Bahrain, Philippines, Korea, UK and Japan and he was also nominated as composer and performer under the Best Novelty Song of The Year Category during the Philippines' Awit Awards 2001, the most prestigious awarding body for professional songwriters in the country.
As a young boy, as early as 7 years of age, Dennis' first hand at music was playing drums for a tribal percussion group which performed for festivals. Having parents who loved music further honed his listening skills and developed his love for the art.
When he was in 5th grade, he played bass for a school band and later on played drums. He also engaged in performances during his high school and college years. Although his major course at The University of the Philippines Diliman was Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, he enrolled for classes at the College of Music taking up Music Theory and Rudiments and Solfeggio. It was also during that time that he started to perform at the local bar circuits and concert shows. Although not having formal credits with a Music College, his on the road actual experiences taught him well and helped him with the everyday scenarios of actual performances, not just theories. Realizing his lack of formal education in music, he further studied music theory by himself and at times with the aid of friends who are top music graduates. The combination of being an instinctive musician and theoretical musician proved to be of great value as the years passed.
After sometime performing live with different people, a band he was with performed inside the US Military Bases in the Philippines. Not long after, in 1991, the band was offered a contract gig to perform in Singapore. From there, the gigs both local and international went on and throughout the journey, a tedious learning process in the art of music and live performance further pushed his boundaries.
Although primarily a drummer when performing live, he plays guitar during some sets, bass, harmonica and does keyboard music sequencing, a craft he learned during his stay in Maldives using an MC50 as computer sequencing did not exist yet then. Gradually, his love for live performance was coupled with the interest for music creation and audio synthesis. He also learned a lot from peers who were ahead of him in sound design such Ardie Lopez and Norman Gahol aside from learning a thing or two during his recording sessions or studio related works. A friend and co-worker described him as a 'sponge" absorbing anything useful which catches his interest.
His first jingle project was for a mineral drinking water company called Aqua Soft for Red Damien Studios of which he made a music jingle which also beacme a company theme. From there, although he was not really thinking of himself as a jingle writer yet, projects came in. With the advent of technology, new software and hardware emerge and almost always he tried to familiarize himself with what became industry standards and what proved to be effective which is why he uses different softwares or DAWs depending on the requirements of a project. He made it a point that anywhere he goes, he would hook up with musicians or producers in the are to perhaps work on a project, share and also learn which he says is an endless process in this craft. Later on he developed his skills in sound design aside from song-writing, mixing and mastering.
At present, Dennis performs live as a drummer-vocalist with the band KAKTOOZ of which he is also a songwriter and band-leader. Countries in Asia he traveled to perform at include Singapore, Bahrain, Hongkong, China and The Republic of Maldives and throughout the years and has been involved in numerous album projects as well. Performing live and the creation of sound and music are his deepest passions and a project is not just a job but a work of art.
